This incredibly special wall hanging is a genuine and original antique Buddhist Temple Scroll from North Thailand. It was painted over a 100 years ago by special temple artists who were employed to recreate aspects of Buddha’s life.
This one depicts The Footprint of Buddha. This iconography can be found carved into the feet of large Buddha statues in various temples around the world. These footprints are complex and need to be decoded by scholars whose interpretations can vary. One explanation is that the symbols are representations of Buddha’s earthly existence as well as his teachings.
This footprint features many symbols featuring concepts of the cosmos, royalty, religion and mythical creatures. Many of the symbols also depict a diagram of the Buddhist universe consisting of mountains, rivers, continents and constellations. You will see at the heel there is a wheel, this symbolises the central teachings of Buddhism: reincarnation and the teachings of Buddha. Each toe contains a conch shell which is a reference to the sound of Buddha’s spiritual knowledge echoing around the world.
The two tone colour palette is strikingly simple and beautiful. Even though this is an antique, it matches perfectly with modern decor, especially one styled with a limited colour palette as the gold looks wonderful with neutral tones.
